I uninstalled the freichat_panel and dropped the frei_xxx tables from the database, but I am still getting the error msg: "module freichatx says: hardcode.php file not found" on my site in different places. How do I stop that message from showing up?

You must have copy pasted the freichat code (at the end of installation) somewhere (in any of your templates or index.php files) .

Remove that code and all alerts will disappear

I found the code that I had inserted into a header.php file of the theme I am using in my site. All is good now...thanks for your response.
