When we can expect big update?

This system scripts are very old - about 10 years like lemoniade.php - this template system was last time updated in 2010? Really? Is there no way to update system files to actual supported scripts? Codoforum should use same template system like phpbb - it's easy for use and it's little bit updated. Or other template system.

To aswer Your question:

As far as I know (because that question was already ask several times) the Codologic team (which are only 2 people) are working and updating the FreiChat script at the moment.

If they finished FreiChat they will work on a Codoforum update. The problem with the outdated lemonade php framework is well known. I think they will update to another framework too and also update all other dependencies.

Lets be patient. smile

Kind regards, Andy

Extra Info / Discussion

For a small developer team like here at Codologic (only 2 people) it would be best to use as few frameworks and third-party scripts as possible.

The problem is, the more frameworks etc. are be used the more update jobs they have to expect. This is an almost impossible task for a small team of only 2 developers to keep up with all the updates and to provide support.

For this reason, I would completely advise against a new PHP framework and just work with the standard PHP instead.

Hi,

Thank you @WebCrew for answering the question.

We have been working on updating our main website and other product websites (including migrating them to new servers).
So, there has been a little less work on codoforum.

Nevertheless, we have started work on V5.0 where we will upgrade most if not all the old libraries.

@admin It's possible to share codoforum code on github? We will help improve code.

@MESSIAH We cannot share the code on Github because we don't think the open-source model is sustainable for us and the project in the long run.

We however can add your email and give you access to our bitbucket repository if you are interested in contributing smile

@WebCrew

I would completely advise against a new PHP framework and just work with the standard PHP instead.

We agree with this, It has been rather tempting to just use a framework, going forward we are in the opinion that rather than code to a framework, we would rather code to a PSR/Interface and easily switch/upgrade libraries or even frameworks if required.

We have been keeping a close watch on things with the developments in PHP (before we do any drastic changes),

We are particularly interested in these two:
https://github.com/beberlei/php-src/pull/2? (no voted in, but very likely to be added into PHP)
https://wiki.php.net/rfc/typed_properties_v2 (already available in PHP)

The combination of these will likely have a drastic change on how we have been coding in PHP with new PSRs that take advantage of the above features and frameworks will swiftly follow.

@admin and @adesh

Because PHP RFC: Typed Properties 2.0 does have some performance problems I think thats not good for a forum system. Also forcing developers to use getter and setter methods is quite a little to complicated and does not make coding easier. But here it depends on you whether you are willing to accept this little extra effort in coding work.

Attributes v2 has already 6.100 forks and I think is on a good way to get more well known in the near future. I think its a great idea to make use of it.

My other opinion:

All in all, it is important to think carefully about such a decision and to well clarify all the pros and cons. Unfortunately there are many examples where good CMS and forum systems have lost popularity after such a big update. It would be a shame if Codoforum would drop because of a hasty decision. So please don't let the community put you under pressure. It would also be important in the decision to make it as easy as possible for third party developers to develop plugins and themes in the future, because that would give Codoforum the well-deserved boost to finally reach the level of awareness it deserves.

Kind regards and good luck mates,

Andy

P.S.: If I can help You with something let me know it please. Writing documentations, tutorials, traslations, community work etc all the things that keep you away from coding smile - I would be happy to help You (for free, of course, it's fun for me).
