Roadmap

Hi,

First of all, let me congratulate you for this great project. I have been successfully using an older, heavily modified (by myself) version of FreiChat on my social networking website for more than 1 year now.

Problem is, my website is kind of big and, although I have multiple dedicated servers to support it, I would prefer to reduce server load somehow. Currently, at peak hours, there are over 1000 online users at the same time. Each uses an instance of Frei Chat that only shows up his own friend list, of course. Sometimes there are delays between page load and chat load.

Now, my plan is to somehow switch to a system using full push (instead of ajax polling). What are your plans in the future regarding push features (and regarding other features as well)? Do you estimate the performance improvement in version 7.6 (using Comet long polling) will be big enough to be worth switching to 7.6, or should I wait for the next version? (I think I am using a version 4.* now)

It would be nice if we could see the upcoming features somewhere and maybe a rough time estimate for them.
Thank you so much.

Do you estimate the performance improvement in version 7.6 (using Comet long polling) will be big enough to be worth switching to 7.6

7.6 has huge performance benefits over 4.x,
The average time for each request was about 16ms(on our linux computers) for versions prior to 7.x, but now it has been reduced to 6-8ms.
There are also a lot of security issues that have been fixed.

Our Two Immediate priorities:
Currently we are testing our peer to peer based Audio/video chat. It will be released on 1st Jan(new year).
The next thing would be to use websockets which will allow for true push(scheduled to be released in the month of February)

after those we have a long To Do List:
* making it mobile compatible
*making it XMPP compliant for integrating with existing technologies etc etc.

Necessity is the mother of all inventions!

Ok, thanks a lot for the fast reply. I'll probably upgrade it now, to get used to your code again, and once more when the video chat and push get implemented.
I'll also buy a copy to support your project.

P.S. Soon reaching 10 million messages! :)
